Assessment of the ability of the bioelectric effect to eliminate mixed-species biofilms.

Microbes have been able to persist in water distribution systems through the development of multicellular communities known as biofilms. This study evaluated the usefulness of the bioelectric effect for the elimination of water distribution system biofilms from annular reactors. The bioelectric effect did not have any bactericidal action either alone or when coupled with free chlorine.

The effect of bacterial biofilms on post-sinus surgical outcomes.

BACKGROUND Although the existence of biofilms on the sinus mucosa of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is now well established, the role that these structures play remains unclear. It is thought that biofilms may contribute to the recalcitrant and persistent nature that characterizes CRS, but little research exists documenting the effect that they have on postoperative mucosal outcomes...

Verticalization of bacterial biofilms

Biofilms are communities of bacteria adhered to surfaces. Recently, biofilms of rod-shaped bacteria were observed at single-cell resolution and shown to develop from a disordered, two-dimensional layer of founder cells into a three-dimensional structure with a vertically-aligned core. Here, we elucidate the physical mechanism underpinning this transition using a combination of agent-based and c...

The 'Swiss cheese' instability of bacterial biofilms

We demonstrate a novel pattern that results in bacterial biofilms as a result of the competition between hydrodynamic forces and adhesion forces. After the passage of an air plug, the break-up of the residual thin liquid film scrapes and rearranges bacteria on the surface, such that a ‘Swiss cheese’ pattern of holes is left in the residual biofilm. Bacteria often adhere to surfaces, where they ...

Bacterial biofilms in the human gastrointestinal tract.

Microbial biofilms were first described in 1936 and subsequent research has unveiled their ubiquity and physiological distinction from free-living (planktonic) microorganisms. In light of their emerging significance this review examines the bacterial biofilms within the human gastrointestinal tract. Attention is paid to the nature of these mucosally- associated populations, focusing on the prot...
